SYLLABUS
General Information

Student Learning Outcomes
This course is designed to fulfill the undergraduate requirement for organic chemistry required for Home Economics and Nursing majors to introduce the basic concepts of organic chemistry and biochemistry, including classification, structure, physical and chemical properties, and function of biological molecules.

Prerequisites:
Chem.51, Chem 65, or Chem 101

Class Schedule
Lecture hours: S 8:00 AM – 11:00 AM K 420
Laboratory: S 12:00 AM – 3:10 PM K 464

Required Lecture Materials

Textbook: Hein, M., Best, L., Pattison, S, and Arena, S. Introduction to General, Organic and
Biochemistry, 9th Ed. John Wiley & Son, Inc. 2007.
The flexible organic molecular model kit from Darling models.
Students can use any other model kit but instructions in class will refer to the Darling models.

Required Laboratory Materials
Laboratory Manual. Handouts will be provided, free of charge.
Three ring binder to collect lab handouts.
Bound laboratory notebook with carbon copy.
Laboratory coat (apron) and safety goggles.
Plastic bag to store lab coat and goggles.

Grading
Exams (110 pts x 4) - 440 pts
Quizzes (30 pts x 5) - 150 pts
Laboratory experiments (20 pts x 10) - 200 pts
HW - 50 pts
Final exam - 160 pts
Maximum score (total) - 1000 pts

The point score corresponds to the final letter grades:
900 - 1000 = A
800 - 899 = B
700 - 799 = C
600 - 699 = D
< 600 = F An F in the lab will result automatically in an F for the whole course regardless of point total.

Exams and Quizzes
Exam is an hour test covering the specific part of a course (see schedule). The quizzes can be administered at any time during the lecture. The quiz covers currently learned material.
Graded exams/quizzes will be available for you to look at the following lecture. If you need further discussion of your exam/quiz, arrange time during office hours. Please return your exam/quiz to the instructor after review. Exams/quizzes are not to leave the classroom.
Your exam/quiz score will be recorded after the test/quiz has been reviewed by the student. Exams/quizzes not returned will be recorded as a “0” – zero for that exam/quiz.

Homework Assignments
The assigned problems are for your use weekly for the assigned chapter of a textbook (see schedule). The HW for the assigned chapters will be collected at the day of the current exam, checked, recorded, and returned to the students at the same day. Late HW will result in 50% off points. The HW turned in has to have both the copied questions/assignments and the answers. The HW package must be stapled.

Lab Instructions
- Read the theory and procedures for each experiment before class.
- All lab work must be conducted during the time period assigned for the lab in which you have enrolled.
- A clean bench space and clean glassware at the end of the experiment is the part of your experiment grade.
- Lab report that does not follow the lab report outline will not be graded.

Safety
Safety must be a primary consideration for all students entering the chemical lab.
All students are responsible for strict adherence to the list of laboratory safety rules read and singed by all students. Students have responsibility for learning and understanding the appropriate safety features for each experiment. Each student has an obligation to consult with the instructor when safety procedures are not clear.
OHSA-approved eye protection (safety goggles) must be worn at all times in the laboratory!
Violations may result in dismissal from the course!

Attendance and Absence Policy
Students are expected to attend all class meetings. Students may be dropped from class for failure to attend all class meetings during the first week of instruction if they have not made prior arrangement with an instructor. Students also may be dropped for continuous or cumulative absences. With two unjustified absences the student will be excluded from the course. Two tardiness are considered as one unjustified absence.
Any student remaining on the official roll sheet after the last official day of dropping classes must
(by State Law) be assigned a letter grade of “A” through “F”. There will be no makeup exams, quizzes, or labs. Missed assignments will be counted as zero, except in rare, extenuating circumstances. The unjustified absence in the Final Exam will result automatically in an “F” for the whole course unless the instructor is advised of extenuating circumstances in advance or within 24 hours of a day of the final exam.

Students with Disabilities who need assistance or accommodations should contact the instructor.

Cellular phones are not allowed!
Ringing of such items during the class or during the lab will result in a deduction of 50 points of the student’s grade; ringing during an exam will result in a grade of “F” on the exam.

Academic integrity
Students who violate the academic standards – 2005-2006 College catalog,
http://www.lattc.edu/lattc/catalog_contents.htm - will be referred to the Vice President of Academic Affairs and may be expelled from the course, and/or from the college.
